Septic Tank Additives

There are many companies promoting their septic tank additives, saying they can solve all of your septic woes. For over 15 years, these claims have not yet been proven by any independent study.  In a few cases it has been shown that additives created problems that wouldn't have occurred if these additives had not been used.

Bottom line, there's no magic bullet.  Do the regular recommended preventative maintenance, and your system will perform properly for a long time.  If you don't do the maintenance you will discover that your septic system is the most expensive system in your home to replace.  Your biggest opportunity for savings comes from doing the maintenance how and when it should be.

If you still want to use a septic additive, for whatever reason, at least verify that it contains just non-pathogenic bacteria - no enzymes, no surfactants, no emulsifiers, etc.  We carry two such products that we also use in the rare case when a bacterial supplement is needed.  Like everything else, a little bit of these products can be okay but overuse can be bad.
